Disposable people will be a duet art show featuring corky artist, Anna Spradley and new comer to the houston scene, Emily Akins. Spradley is known for her creative style that some have described as cartoon-like portraiture. In her paintings you will often find apparent biblical undertones as they are often inspired by a spiritual battle. Akins also has a uniques style, specializing in painting playful skeletons. This will be her first show, so come out and show support for an upcoming artist and an unforgettable show!

Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool in Houston, Starts Jan. 30th @ The Contemporary Arts Museum

Barkley Hendricks’s stylistic renderings connect the art movements of American realism and post-modernism while touching upon many of the art movements of the 1960s and 1970s—pop art, photorealism, minimalism, even black aesthetic nationalism. Join Hendricks and organizing curator Trevor Schoonmaker, curator of contemporary art at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, for a discussion of the artist’s work. This exhibition is comprised of 57 paintings, including fullfigure portraits and lesserknown early works.

It’s May 1968, shortly after the murder of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a month before the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Five Black kitchen workers at a segregated lunch counter are forced to engage in painful self-examination brought about by the senseless death of a young boy. Through passionate conversations, these women face the realities of life on the cusp of change. Jammed in a hot, airless room they must battle prejudice, poverty, ignorance and each other as they search for inspiration.

The unsigned band from Los Angeles, featuring Twilight actor Jackson Rathbone, will be showcasing their eclectic sound at Warehouse Live. The group is named after the Hundredth-Monkey Effect, in which involves an instantaneous spreading of an idea or ability to the remainder of the population. This phenomenon is illustrated by their unique sound.
