Can Beyonce Pull Off Playing Angela Davis?
February 11, 2009 by Eddie Nicole · 16 Comments
Franco-Algerian producer-writer-director Rachid Bouchareb, is setting up a movie on the early life of Angela Davis, a leading figure of the civil rights movement and one-time FBI renegade.
Bouchareb, who will produce the movie through his French production company, plans to shoot in summer 2010 with a budget in the region of $20 million-$30 million, and is lining up a major French backer. The script is by novelist Yasmina Khadra, whose book “The Attack” has been optioned by Focus Features. No cast is yet attached but Bouchareb has his lead actress firmly in mind: “I want Beyonce Knowles to play Angela Davis,” he said. “It’s a great dramatic role for her.”
Question of the day? CAN BEYONCE PULL THIS OFF?
There has been no confirmation on whether the songstress will play the role of the Black Panther activist, Angela Davis, but she is the top prospect for the lead….Unbelievable!
With all the new up and coming black starlets and veterans who consistently get passed over for prized roles, would it be fair to say the French filmmakers should broaden their scope on black American actresses? No offense against Miss B or should I say Sasha Fierce, but Taraji P. Henson would be a great choice. She has showcased her broad range in the blockbuster ” The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. Since her nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, her price tag has surely risen and she’s the new talk of Hollywood. Sanna Lathan would be a great pick as well, her broadway roll in “A Raisin in The Sun” was well accepted with a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. There are countless actresses, known and unknown who could get their big break with this role. Playing the role of Angela Davis is too important and would take a well seasoned and educated actress to capture the passion of the 60′s movement. When watching Beyonce, she’s always Beyonce, the beautiful and talented R&B songstress. Can a movie audience get past her persona? or better yet, Can she?

hell to the nawl! definitely not…sorry B! But I didn’t even believe Foxy Cleopatra – and that was a damn blacksploitation character she was emulating!
thank you.
Ummmm I don’t know. Beyonce is ok with the acting skills, but if they expect to get some Oscar and Golden Globe noms, I would go with someone else.
That would be a travesty. Like the biggest miscarriage of cosmic justice since New Kids on the Block going back on tour (who let them do that?). I mean, they could use Sanaa Lathan, Sophie Okonedo, or Viola Davis who’s nominated for an Oscar this year for Doubt. Hell, give Angela Bassett some favorable lighting or send Gabrielle Union to a year of acting classes and throw her in before you even consider giving this part to Mrs. Carter.
No, she can’t pull it off. I love B, but acting isn’t her strong suit.
Well, it’s all a movie and maybe this will give us a chance to see a more serious side of her. The producer of the movie is only going for the looks, not talent. If so they would have picked Jada all day for the role.
i know angela bassett, jade or regina would be good for the angela davis role.and they are very educated in acting.BEYONCE TAKE A BACK SEAT.
‘B’ STICK TO SINGING,THERE ARE THINGS MONEY JUST CAN’T BUY.AND THAT’S TALENT.
ANGELA BASSETT IS THE BEST ACTRESS EVER,JADE AND REGINA NOT FAR BEHIND.’B’ YOU CAN’T ROLL WITH THE BIG DOGS.TAKE TIME OUT TO HAVE BABIES FOR YOUR MAN.FOR EACH BABY YOU HAVE FOR J’ WILL BE A MILLION SO GO HOME AND MAKE YOUR MONEY.
we all know that you are with jay-z for the money,go home and do what a wife does for her husband for money.sorry you are a bad actor ‘B’
I dont know much about Angela Davis, but I am going to start reading up on her. This woman is powerful.I am sorry. Even if Beyonce gets the acting techniques down, she cannot embody this womans spirit and strength. If they allow her to play this role, they deserve every critisism they get.
Sophie Okonedo would be a much better choice. I love Bey…but as a singer.
MAN! they were making me irritated i knw she was getting fed up! i was waiting for her to say LOOK!…..
then i watched a video of the soul of black girls, made me tear up!!!!!!!! i will be getting that dvd asap! touched my soul literately! Amen!
oh sorry i got caught up in the videos, i totally forgot about the question @ hand! oops….. i think b needs to be @ the premier but not featured in the premier….. (dang i was tryna say it nice)
ERYKAH BADU, ANGELA BASSETT, TARAJI P HENSON, SANA LATHEN, SOPHIE OKONEDO
HALLE BERRY IS PLAYED OUT, AND BEYONCE I JUST AS BAD
I agree with Jean except Angela is too old for the younger Angela Davis, I pic Eryhak, a natural Black Panther of today.
