“Cute Little Black Girls are Everywhere” Campaign

Couldn’t have guessed a better time! Has the day finally come that young African American girls may now get the spotlight in the child modeling world? Apparently, talent and modeling agencies across the world are scrambling to find cute little “Obama-like” girls to add to their rosters of talent. Agencies are getting an influx of requests for African American girls to fill spots for advertising and marketing. The new era of beauty has arrived! It’s ridiculous that it took these two girls to catapult a need for adolescent black models, as if this is a brand new kind of child.

Madison Avenue is scrambling to adjust to a new era, when the most admired people in America are a black family. To reflect this reality, talent scouts are on the hunt for models who look like the Obama children, Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10. “People are looking for girls who resemble them,” says Charlie Winfield, the head booker at FunnyFace Today. Tali Lev, an agent with the Gilla Roos agency, keeps links to her “Sasha” and “Malia” model lists on her desktop for easy access. “Photographers even want them for their portfolios.” Marlene Wallach, president of Wilhelmina Kids & Teens, says the First Daughters are tough subjects to match. “It’s a very specific age and a very specific ethnicity, so there aren’t that many girls that would necessarily fit the bill.”
It’s almost weird and exploitive in a sense. The folks over at New York Magazine Online must have unconsciously ignored the site of little black girls across America, because the statement “…there aren’t many girls that would fit the bill” is ludicrous. So with that said, please support the “Little Black Girls Are Everywhere, You Idiots” campaign over at The Black Snob

Although the Obama girls are beautiful in their own right, people of African decent have many faces and complextions. I would hope that in this new wave of “love for people of color”, marketing campaigns will show diversity across all backgrounds and skin tones. We’ll see.

Here are some pics of the Vogue photo shoot with Michelle Obama. The First Lady wore her favorite J. Crew items from their upcoming Fall line . J. Crew has really stepped up there production of fashionable clothing. J. Crew’s head stylist assisted on the shoot and Mrs. Obama was very involved in the final style choices. You can read the full article here, but the issue won’t hit stands until Tuesday, February 17th.
I honestly expected something more couture-like, but with the economy in shambles, I’m not surprised that Michelle kept it smart and stuck with the “main street” look. What do you think about the cover?

First and Foremost, Kanye has to jump off whatever spaceship he’s been flying on for the past year. It’s understood that he’s gone through some extenuating circumstances, but I have not been feeling his attitude or his new-found nerdy chic meets gay guy style for quite some time. What happened to the cool Chicago thing he had going?
On another note, the blond bombshell you see with West is model Amber Rose….Interesting look! Neither of them compliment each other, but the way she’s rocking the bald and the blonde is fierce!

Can Beyonce Pull Off Playing Angela Davis?

Franco-Algerian producer-writer-director Rachid Bouchareb, is setting up a movie on the early life of Angela Davis, a leading figure of the civil rights movement and one-time FBI renegade.
Bouchareb, who will produce the movie through his French production company, plans to shoot in summer 2010 with a budget in the region of $20 million-$30 million, and is lining up a major French backer. The script is by novelist Yasmina Khadra, whose book “The Attack” has been optioned by Focus Features. No cast is yet attached but Bouchareb has his lead actress firmly in mind: “I want Beyonce Knowles to play Angela Davis,” he said. “It’s a great dramatic role for her.”
Question of the day? CAN BEYONCE PULL THIS OFF?
There has been no confirmation on whether the songstress will play the role of the Black Panther activist, Angela Davis, but she is the top prospect for the lead….Unbelievable!
With all the new up and coming black starlets and veterans who consistently get passed over for prized roles, would it be fair to say the French filmmakers should broaden their scope on black American actresses? No offense against Miss B or should I say Sasha Fierce, but Taraji P. Henson would be a great choice. She has showcased her broad range in the blockbuster ” The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. Since her nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, her price tag has surely risen and she’s the new talk of Hollywood. Sanna Lathan would be a great pick as well, her broadway roll in “A Raisin in The Sun” was well accepted with a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. There are countless actresses, known and unknown who could get their big break with this role. Playing the role of Angela Davis is too important and would take a well seasoned and educated actress to capture the passion of the 60’s movement. When watching Beyonce, she’s always Beyonce, the beautiful and talented R&B songstress. Can a movie audience get past her persona? or better yet, Can she?

Chris Brown Arrested After Alleged Rihanna Assault and more

Grammy day was supposed to be a glittery affair for R&B’s reigning It couple, Chris Brown and Rihanna. But things went horribly amiss.
About the time Brown was scheduled to be singing “Forever” onstage at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, he was instead detained by police, being questioned for allegedly roughing up Rihanna.
Brown, 19, turned himself in at the Wilshire station around 6:30 p.m. and was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. The case will now be sent to the district attorney’s office and further charges could be filed. He was released from jail after posting $50,000 bail.
Sources tell E! News that the alleged victim was Rihanna, 20, and that she suffered visible bruises on her face during an altercation that took place hours earlier. Both in turn balked on scheduled Grammy performances.
A spokeswoman for Brown’s label declined comment. Rihanna’s publicist, Amanda Silverman, would only tell E! News that the 20-year-old “Disturbia” singer was involved in an unspecified traffic mishap. “Rihanna is well,” the rep said. “Thank you for concern and support.”
Per department policy, police declined to identify the alleged victim in the incident, which occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the Hancock Park area, apparently as the two were heading home from Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy bash, where they had been all smiles.
In a statement, police say Brown and his companion ”became involved in an argument. After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker.”
By the time officers arrived on the scene, Brown had split.
Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, decided against singing a medley of “Disturbia” and “Live Your Life” at tonight’s awards. Likewise, Brown scrapped his scheduled performance of “Forever.”
“We’re sorry she is unable to join us this evening,” said the Recording Academy. A virtually identical statement was issued for Brown’s absence.

TAMEKA’S PLASTIC SURGERY COMPLICATIONS
Usher was also suppose to be down in LA for the Grammy’s, but canceled his appearances after his wife Tameka suffered complications from plastic surgery:
Usher’s wife Tameka Foster Raymond has suffered a serious injury due to complications from plastic surgery in Brazil, reports Access Hollywood.
On Saturday night, Usher canceled his performance at the Recording Academy and Clive Davis’s Pre-Grammy Gala. Davis told party-goers the singer had to bow out due to a “serious injury in the family.”
On Sunday, Davis, Sony Music Worldwide’s chief creative officer, told PEOPLE. “I talked to his mom. My thoughts are with them, whatever they’re facing.” SOURCE

Zine Fest Houston is an event dedicated to promoting zines, minicomics and other forms of small press, alternative, underground and diy media & art. It is also a grassroots attempt to build the local zine, diy and alternative media scenes and form networks with media creators in other areas.
ADMISSION IS ALWAYS FREE and table space is provided free or at-cost for zinesters, writers, artists, distros and other individuals and groups involved in the creation, publication distribution or promotion of alternative media and diy.
The festival is a new and different experience every time, offering a diverse new crop of zines and other projects every year including many never before seen anywhere else and other unique sights such as a live chicken manning one of the exhibitor tables during our first festival.
The goal of the event is for attendees to not only discover new zines, but also to be inspired to create their own diy art and media projects.
